The National Maritime Center (NMC) is now recommending mariners submit their Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential renewal applications a full six months ahead of expiration. The previous recommendation was 90 days.
Why the Change?
Recent changes in policy, coupled with various challenges, have led to significant delays in processing times. The current reported average for application processing is 100 days. To ensure a smooth renewal process and avoid any last-minute complications, this extended timeframe provides a safety factor for potential issues.
Renewal Recommendations:
You have the option to renew your license up to 8 months in advance with the added benefit of having it postdated. Considering the current delays, we highly recommend submitting renewals as early as possible within this 8-month window.
